Describe an appropriate reaction to a 7-year-old child who kicks and bites when you attempt to give an injection

Accept that the child's behavior comes from fear and/or a desire to avoid pain. Calmly set limits by saying, "We do not kick and bite here.". Explain what you are doing and why. For example, "We need to make sure you hold still while I give you this shot. It will help you feel better.". Even if restraints are used, help the child understand why they are being used.
