In the days or hours before death, activity declines; the person moves and communicates less and shows little interest in food, water, and surroundings. At the same time, body temperature, blood pressure, and circulation to the limbs fall, so the hands and feet feel cool and skin color changes to a duller, grayish hue. When the transition from life to death is imminent, the person often moves through three phases:
1. The agonal phase. The Greek word agon means "struggle." Here agonal refers to gasps and muscle spasms during the first moments in which the regular heartbeat disintegrates.
2. Clinical death. A short interval follows in which heartbeat, circulation, breathing, and brain functioning stop, but resuscitation is still possible.
3. Mortality. The individual passes into permanent death.
