Identify the four listening styles, and describe the situation in which each style is most appropriate.
What will be an ideal response?
- The student should be able to turn the question around by pointing out that which style is best depends on the listening situation and the communication content and objectives. The student should also give reasons and circumstances for each style.
* Relational-oriented listeners work well in small groups and interpersonal situations.
* Task-oriented listeners look at the overall structure of the message to see what action needs to be taken; they also like efficient, clear, and briefer messages. These listeners want to do something with information they hear; in other words, they want it to serve a purpose or function.
* Analytical listeners generally consider all sides of an issue before making a decision or reaching a conclusion, so when judgments need to be made, these listeners can make contributions.
* Critical listeners are comfortable listening to detailed, complex information and focusing on the facts, yet they are especially adept in noting contradictions in the facts presented. They are also likely to catch errors in the overall logic and reasoning that is being used to reach a conclusion.
