Explain the expectancy violations theory

What will be an ideal response

This theory suggests that we develop expectations for appropriate nonverbal behavior in ourselves and others, based on our cultural backgrounds, personal experiences, and knowledge of those with whom we interact. When these rules are violated, we experience heightened arousal and the nature of our interpersonal relationship with the other person becomes a critical factor as we attempt to interpret and respond to the situation.
