The transversal metacarpal ligament prevents abduction of the CMC joints of the fingers by tying together the heads of the metacarpals, thus enhancing CMC stability of the fingers. At the MCP joints, the transverse metacarpal ligament blends with and reinforces the anterior joint capsule of each of the fingers. The ligament also prevents the long finger flexor tendons from becoming entrapped by the joint and plays a role in maintaining the location of the interossei muscles, which remain behind the transverse metacarpal ligament.
