The long-term outcome for autistic disorder is variable. In one controlled longitudinal study, 46% of children who were diagnosed with autistic disorder had a poor outcome as young adults while 53% had fair to good/very good outcomes as young adults. IQ remained stable from childhood to adulthood. Emotional problems were present among 62% of the sample. Only 27% of the participants had ever been employed, for an average of 5 hours per week and most often in sheltered workshops. Fifty-six percent were living at home while 35% lived in a group home or foster care.
