Employers are not allowed to make hiring, promotion, or lay-off decisions based on race, religion, gender, family situation, or age. The Act is enforced by the Equal Employment Opportunity Commission (EEOC) that has the power to investigate violations of the Act, to force employers to hire an applicant or promote an employee who was unfairly denied employment or promotion, and to assess financial penalties against an employer.
