Describe how allostatis and allostatic load/overload contribute to an individual's adaptation to stress
What will be an ideal response?
• Allostasis – process of maintaining stability or homeostasis by activating stress hormones to adapt to stress (environmental or internal)
• Allostatic load or overload – wear and tear to the brain and body by allostatis, particularly when allostatis is continually activated or doesn't stop when stress is no longer present
• Allostasis is a needed and adaptive process that protects an individual in times of stress and nonstress; however, when this process goes into overload or is dysregulated, it can cause damage to the body and the brain (allostatic load or overload) leading to psychopathology or physical illness
