- An awareness of effective nonverbal communication is essential when you present a speech. Personal appearance is a factor in nonverbal communication.
- Personal appearance-what speakers look like and the way they dress, groom, and present themselves to others-is an extremely important consideration. Typical "student attire" is not always acceptable.
- As a general rule, you should use common sense in dressing for the occasion. For example, caps, any large pieces of jewelry, and loud/colorful clothing may distract your audience from what you are saying (and have a negative effect on the people evaluating your presentation).
- First impressions are based mainly on appearance. Your audience members may form instant, hard-to-change opinions about your attitude toward them and yourself. In this way, appearance can affect your credibility.
- Appearance can have an impact on a speaker's self-image and thus can affect how the speaker communicates with others. When you look good, you feel good, and that has a positive effect on your performance.
