Describe the barriers to joint movement

A complete response should include these concepts:
• The anatomic barrier is the limit in the ROM that is determined by the shape and fit of the bones at the joint.
• Also called the "absolute end range"
• The physiologic barrier is the limit in the ROM that is determined by normal nerve and sensory function. The physiologic barrier occurs:
• Just before the absolute end range of the joint
• When a joint is reaching its end range
• When the tissues reach a full stretch
• To protect the joints
• The pathologic barrier is a movement barrier caused by a neurological change due to pathology.
• This barrier is due to stiffness, pain, or a "catch" in the joint.
• The joint's range of motion is reduced to restrict movement and protect the joint.
