Give an example of the relationship between low self-esteem and the cycle of failure in an area other than academics. How might the cycle of failure be broken?
What will be an ideal response?
A good answer would include the following key points:
- A child with low self-esteem faces difficulties because his or her self-esteem becomes enmeshed in a cycle of failure.
- A child with low self-esteem is trying out for a soccer team. Because of his low self-esteem, he expects to do poorly and not make the team. As a consequence, he is anxious and probably doesn't practice or even prepare for the try out. (He may even arrive late.) In the end, his expectations probably come to pass, and this confirms his original expectation, reinforcing his low self-esteem and the cycle of failure continues.
- This example can be played out with a number of social situations.
