Discuss three measures of central tendencyNmean, median, mode. Which is the most widely used?
What will be an ideal response?
Central tendency is one number that summarizes the center or main tendency in a set of numbers. Mean is the arithmetic average, computed by adding all scores and dividing the total by the number of scores. It is the most widely used. Median is the middle point and the 50th percentile. Half the cases are above it and half are below it. Arrange scores from lowest to highest, count the scores and the score in the very middle is the median. If there are an even number of scores, take the two middle scores and divide by two to get the median. Mode is the score that appears most frequently. It is easiest to compute
but the least useful measure of central tendency.
