How does sleep change over the first six months of life?

At birth infants sleep 16 to 17 hours a day in periods of a few hours, they spend about half their sleep in REM. Once they are 3-4 months they may sleep 6 or more hours in a row at night and REM time begins to decline. By 6 months their culture will have influenced their sleeping pattern.
