Distinguish between marasmus and kwashiorkor. Explain the causes and consequences of each
What will be an ideal response
Marasmus is a disease of severe protein-calorie deficiency in early infancy. Growth
stops, body tissues waste away, and the infant eventually dies. Kwashiorkor is also
caused by a protein-calorie deficiency but is not as severe. The malnutrition in
kwashiorkor usually occurs after age 1. The protein deficiency makes the child more
vulnerable to the effects of other diseases such as diarrhea, influenza, and measles.
