Answer: In general, Asian societies have a history of venerating the elderly more than Western societies. Asian cultures like the Japanese, who are more industrialized, are beginning to experience a change toward more Western views of aging. In Asian societies, the elders usually control resources to a great extent. Asian cultures are more organized around extended families that integrate older generations; therefore, young Asians see elders as knowledgeable and valuable. Chinese society promotes respect for elders, but actual behavior may not accurately reflect those beliefs except in elite society. Latino and African cultures also venerate elderly people.
