Compare and contrast the Latino and Asian American U.S. populations as related to community relations.
What will be an ideal response?
In 2015, one in six people living in the U.S. is a Latino. This statistic is projected to grow to one in four people in the U.S. by 2050. However, though only 6% of the U.S. population, Asian Americans outpaced Latinos in 2015 as the fastest-growing multicultural segment in the U.S. Every organization should be strategically addressing how they will serve the Latino community now and begin examining ways to implement community relations to the Asian American community very soon.
What those community relations programs would look like depends on values key to each demographic. Asian Americans are the highest-income and best-educated racial group in the United States, and they place a greater value on marriage, parenthood, handwork and career success. In contrast, the rate of school drop-outs among Latinos is cause for concern and has a direct impact on careers, families and future success for Latino individuals. Both groups desire to live healthier lives and within the Asian American population, there is a disproportionate incidence of Hepatitis B.
Also unique to the Asian American population, older individuals rely on the local community for information and younger individuals act as their gatekeepers. Community relations programs would need to be designed to serve this particular communication path.
However, for either demographic, community relations programs must be seen as building authentic and mutually beneficial relationships, founded on trust built over the long-term, not just an annual promotion to drive profits.
