There are two primary categories included in paralinguistics. Describe each category and provide specific examples

What will be an ideal response?

Paralinguistics are all aspects of spoken language except the words themselves. Two primary categories of paralinguistics include voice qualities and vocalizations.

Voice qualities include rate of speech, volume (how loud or soft someone's voice is), pitch (how high or low someone's voice is), and vocal stress (how tight their vocal cords are). When people are nervous, they tend to speak more quickly (rate), slightly more loudly (volume), in a higher pitch with more vocal stress. Another example is someone who is angry might use a slower pace (drawing out words) very loudly, in a lower pitch with vocal stress.

Vocalizations are uttered sounds that do not have the structure of language. For example, I might say "uh-huh" while listening to a friend talk to let her know I am listening, interested, and understand what she is saying. Another example is that I might say "um" while I am speaking to hold my place in the conversation and indicate that I am thinking but have more to say.
