Define plagiarism, and name two types. Why is plagiarism wrong, and what can be done to avoid it in a speech? Explain briefly

What will be an ideal response?

Plagiarism is the use or presentation of another person’s work?words, ideas, illustrations?as if it were your own, without acknowledging this person. It exists on a continuum, from direct plagiarism (using an entire piece written by another) to misattribution plagiarism (using the words or findings of another without acknowledging this). Plagiarism is wrong for several reasons: 1) because it is the theft of another person’s intellectual property; 2) because violators deprive themselves of developing their own ideas and expressing their own thoughts; and 3) because others assume that any work presented is in fact original, so they treat it and evaluate it as such. To avoid even the suggestion of plagiarism, here are guidelines for citing research and avoiding plagiarism: 1) briefly cite and acknowledge all sources of information during the speech, except for common knowledge and widely accepted facts. 2) Acknowledge the source of any ideas that are not your own. 3) Acknowledge the words of another, whether directly quoting or paraphrasing them. 4) Name the author or organization, and include the publication and date if appropriate. 5) Acknowledge help from others. 6) Integrate citations smoothly in the wording of the speech. 7) Include full citations in your outline. 8) When in doubt, ask your instructor.
