What measures should be taken to protect a network from attack?
What will be an ideal response?
This is another question to determine the students' awareness of network security and their thought process on how to protect networks from attack. This chapter does not make them experts but will instead just introduce the subject and give them an overview of security mechanisms. Some of the answers you should discuss are access control and authentication, such as password protection and limited user accounts based on roles in the organization, protection for messages in transit (using cryptography or specific protocols like IPsec), security awareness training for users to prevent opening viruses and worms from e-mail or external sources, and physical protection for the network devices to limit who is allowed to interact with them and make configuration changes. You may also want to suggest the use of access control to prevent connections to the network that are not allowed; this is particularly necessary when WLANs are used and attackers can connect via radio signals from anywhere in the broadcast range of the device.
