Communication helps meet four specific needs. Define the four needs and give example of each as part of a communication scenario
What will be an ideal response?
Answer: Sample student response:
Practical needs are those required to carry out necessary daily tasks and prevent major misunderstandings and problems in everyday life. An example of this is when an employee asks for direction for a new job assignment or a person orders lunch at a cafeteria.
Professional needs are those required to get a job, provide the means to carry out professional tasks and to interact with colleagues or customers, and if effective, can lead to professional success. An example is when a person seeking a job uses good written and oral communication skills to prove to an employer that he or she can interact effectively with colleagues, clients, customers, employees and managers.
Public needs are those that fulfill a civic duty, give the means to stand up for rights, and permit the transmission of knowledge in a public context. An example is when a person needs to speak before the city council or present a workshop in the community.
Personal needs are those that help build and maintain relationships, lead to better understanding and development of self, and help maintain physical and mental health. An example is when a person spends time communicating with a spouse, child, sibling or others in the form of personal, intimate relationships.
