The philosophy of inclusion is that children with disabilities have their needs met best in the
regular classroom. There are two types of inclusion.The first type is education in the regular
classroom at least part of the academic day. The second type, full inclusion, is immersion in the
regular classroom for the entire day. Children who have only physical special needs, such as visual-
assisted devices, make gains in full inclusion classes. If a child has a learning disability, success in an
inclusion classroom depends on the effectiveness of the implementation of the IEP. This may depend
on having more than 1 teacher in the class or co-teaching. All inclusion classes depend on teacher
training and the willingness of teachers to adhere tothe IEPs. A continuum of services is mandated by
federal regulations. Pull-out programs, self-contained classes, individualized classes are all
alternatives.
