Components in a system are in series if the performance of the entire system depends on all the components functioning properly. To compute the reliability of a system composed of components in series, the reliabilities of the individual components are multiplied together.
When components in a system are in parallel, the system can function if a given component in the system fails. System reliability is expressed as 1–P( 1 2... n) if the failures are independent of each other.
The implications for design are that a system composed of many items in series becomes less reliable as components are added to the series. This may be remedied by adding redundancy or backups to a primary system by adding components in parallel.
