Describe the process of emotional development in the first two years of life
What will be an ideal response?
Infants first express three emotional responses, distress, pleasure and interest. From these, the five basic, or primary, emotions develop. These emotions are anger, fear, disgust, surprise, and happiness. Distress differentiates into anger and fear during the first six months or so. By about 6 months, fear is elicited by sudden movement of an object or person toward an infant and as attachment to familiar people develops, "stranger anxiety" occurs. Pleasure develops into differing expressions of happiness including the social smile, which occurs by the 2nd or 3rd month, and laughter about a month later. Interest supplies the foundation for surprise, which can be seen around 6 months of age and is often a result of a violation of perceptual expectations.
