What are snapshots, and what makes them a useful feature when using virtual machines?

What will be an ideal response?

Snapshots are used to preserve the current state of a virtual disk so you can return to it later even after many changes to the guest OS. This can be useful if you're installing new software packages or major updates. If there is a problem, you can quickly revert back to the original snapshot to return the virtual machine to fully working again. The number of snapshots is only limited by available disk space on the host. A complex tree of snapshots can be created with different levels.
