All cells in the body, other than the sex cells, have 46 chromosomes. The sex cells, or gametes (eggs for women, and sperm for men), have 23 chromosomes. After conception, the fertilized egg has 46 chromosomes. Each chromosome is divided into a set of functional units called genes. For most traits, an offspring inherits two genes (one on each pair of chromosomes). Dominant genes are always expressed, while recessive genes are only expressed when the offspring inherits two copies of the recessive gene.
