Define an absence seizure

An absence seizure (also known as a petit mal seizure) is characterized by the loss of awareness of one’s surroundings for a very brief period of time. A person experiencing an absence seizure may have a blank stare, twitch, or blink rapidly. This type of seizure, which most often occurs in children, may come and go without anyone realizing a seizure is occurring.
