Cultural continuity in the peoples of Africa was maintained by traditional systems of belief, ritual practices, and local customs. Carvings served a ritualistic purpose which connected people to the spirit world. The Yoruba cultural carved twin figures representing dead infants which were honored with special care designed to bring parents wealth and good fortune. The Baule people lavish attention on "spirit spouses" represented by carvings. In the Kongo, figures were carved that embodied the Kongolese resistance to the impositions of foreign ideas.
