Identify the quadrivium and the trivium of the medieval university and relate these subjects to current college curricula.
What will be an ideal response?
The quadrivium (the mathematical arts) consists of four subjects: music, arithmetic, geometry, and astronomy. Trivium (the language arts) consists of three subjects: grammar, rhetoric, and dialectic. These subjects were the basis medieval higher education’s liberal arts curriculum. Finally, all of these subjects are still considered core subjects in contemporary institutions of higher education—though they are less likely to be grouped in the same way.
