When working on an InDesign document that you are unfamiliar with, it is likely that you will not know which items on the artboard correspond with a page item on the Layers panel. To find out what a page item is referring to, select the page item on the Layers panel, click the Layers Panel menu button, then click Select Item(s). The object or objects become selected in the document window. To select items and fit them in the window to see them more clearly, choose Select and Fit Item instead. Selecting a layer is also referred to as targeting the layer.
