Definition of giftedness – children who have very high IQ scores – usually 130 or above, or
who demonstrate creativity or who have a superior talent for example in music.
The Terman study found that children with high IQ scores were generally physically healthy, they had
good processing skills and excellent automaticity; they were well-adjusted and had friends; they were
successful later in life.
Sternberg argues that giftedness programs in the United States only focus on children with high IQ
scores or his experiential (analytical) intelligence. They have superior long-term memory which is
well-organized and easily accessed. He states thatchildren who have componential (creative)
intelligence and children who have contextual (practical) intelligence are generally not provided
services because the focus is on children who know the right answers.
