The three artistic proofs according to Aristotle are ethos, pathos, and logos. Each of these proofs can increase a speaker's persuasive ability by adding credibility, logical appeals, and emotional appeals to influence the audience members to believe and act based on the speaker's persuasive goals.

Ethos is credibility. A speaker can discuss their experience, title, or qualifications prior to speaking to establish ethos. For example, a police officer might discuss his training and experience investigating DUI accidents prior to giving a persuasive speech to college students encouraging them to designate a driver.

Logos, or rational appeals, include the use of rhetoric to help the audience see the rationale for a particular conclusion. To build a case to persuade the audience to donate blood, a speaker might talk about how blood donation can save lives, is healthy for individual donors, and is easy to do. In this case, each point is a benefit that could lead the audience to be persuaded that donating blood is something they should try using logical point.

Pathos is the rhetorical use of emotions to affect audience decision making. I might use pathos to persuade by showing pictures of smoker and non-smoker's lungs, with the smoker's lungs being black and unhealthy to create a feeling of fear or disgust in audience members to get them not to smoke.
