A literal contrast shows the difference between two items that possess some
similarities. For example, apples and oranges are both popular kinds of fruit, but you can point
out many differences in color, shape, and taste. Figurative contrasts distinguish items that
share no actual similarities. For example, you could say that Susie is slow, but that she's very
different from a tortoise because she doesn't even care about winning the race.
