BERT: Bit error rate tester. This device tests for bit errors caused by interference on a line by generating a pattern of bits and testing for errors, resulting in the measurement of BER (bit errors/bits transmitted).
Butt set: A butt set is a device used to interrupt telephone lines to test for a dial tone; it is capable of interrupting conversations.
Cable certifier: This device is used to determine the category of cable and the supported frequencies of an existing physical cable.
Cable tester: This device tests the conductors in a copper wire; it is also able to verify the pinout of an RJ-45 connector.
