What is standpoint theory, and how does it explain why people with differing cultural
backgrounds have different perceptions of others' behaviors? Give an example.
What will be an ideal response?
Standpoint theory argues that a person's social position, power, or cultural background
influences how the person perceives the behavior of others. A person from a different culture has
a different way of deciding what behavior is appropriate or not under certain circumstances. For
example, in one culture, it might be completely proper to hug a stranger or give them a peck on
the cheek, while in another culture such behavior would seem odd or inappropriate. Thus, from
the standpoint of the person in the culture where hugging is not common, the behavior of the
person who hugs readily might be seen as unacceptable and even rude behavior.
