To assess moral reasoning, most experts have contrived hypothetical dilemmas for
children to solve. For the most part, researchers expect the child to provide a rationale
for their response. Such paradigms are referred to as production methods. Kohlberg,
using hypothetical dilemmas involving adult characters noted that the moral reasoning
of young children is primitive, and not consistently related to their moral or prosocial
behavior. However, Eisenberg, using simpler, more child-relevant dilemmas noted
consistent developmental differences in the moral reasoning of children. Thus, it has
been concluded that Kohlberg underestimated the moral development of children.
