Describe the SMTP vulnerability in Windows 2000.
What will be an ideal response?
A bug in the authentication process of the SMTP service of Windows 2000 Server lets the SMTP service authenticate unauthorized as well as authorized users. Hackers exploit this flaw and use the SMTP service of a target Windows 2000 server to send unauthorized e-mail messages. They cannot use this vulnerability to obtain administrator privileges on the target system. If a user is not using the SMTP service, it should be disabled. Users should make sure the latest patches are being used.
