Obsessions are persistent, recurrent, intrusive thoughts. Examples include contamination
and fear of harming self or others. Compulsions are repetitive behaviors or mental acts the
person feels driven to perform in a ritualistic way. They are usually in response to an
obsession and done to reduce anxiety. Examples include washing and checking.
