Describe object permanence and provide an example.

What will be an ideal response?

Answer: In Piaget’s theory, object permanence is the recognition by an infant that an object can continue to exist even when it cannot be seen. It is a cognitive breakthrough because the infant now understands that the world is a stable and predictable place, full of objects and people that exist. For example, an infant is playing with a ball and it rolls out of view under a couch where it can no longer be seen. The infant cries and points under the couch, indicating that he believes that the ball still exists, even though he cannot see it.
