Briefly state the overall view of the relationship between heat and aggression. What types of crimes appear to be affected? Describe the research that looked into crime rates at midday and in the evening?
What will be an ideal response?
Aggression is thought to increase as temperature increases. However, an exception seems to be that when temperature gets too high, people become lethargic from the heat and aggression drops. In a study, property crimes (not thought of as crimes of aggression) were not affected by heat, but violent crime went up with heat. In another study, at midday, violent crime went up as temperatures increased, but then dropped off as they became too high. On the other hand, in the evening hours, violent crime went up in a linear fashion and didn't drop off because heat in the evening didn't get to midday levels (so people never became lethargic).
