Describe the four types of biohazardous medical waste
What will be an ideal response?
• Solid—Paper, cans, cups, and other garbage from nonclinical office areas.
• Chemical—Wasted drugs, cleaning solutions, and germicides. These items must be disposed of according to Occupational Safety and Health Administration (OSHA) guidelines.
• Radioactive—Any waste contaminated with radioactive material. Most common in oncology practices, this waste must be disposed of in containers clearly marked "Radioactive" and removed only by licensed facilities.
• Infectious—Any garbage exposed to bodily fluids or any laboratory cultures or blood products. These items must be separated from other waste items, placed in bags clearly labeled "Biohazardous Waste," and removed by a licensed medical waste removal company.
