Describe gender-schema theory and include two gender-related factors that have be present. Give three examples that illustrate gender-schema theory in action
What will be an ideal response?
Gender-schema theory states that children want to learn more about an activity only after first deciding whether it is masculine or feminine. Children must first have developed a gender identity and gender stability. Once children know their gender, they pay attention primarily to experiences and events that are gender-appropriate. One example is a boy who sees boys playing football will decide that football is for boys and that because he is a boy, football is acceptable and he should learn more about it. Another example is a girl who sees her female peers playing with Monster High dolls and goes home and asks her mother for Monster High dolls for her birthday. A third example is a boy who sees male peers playing out "Spiderman" episodes and goes home and watches that particular TV show.
