Describe the physical development of the fetus during the fetal stage
What will be an ideal response?
The fetal stage, the second trimester of pregnancy, is characterized by maturation of fetal organ systems and dramatic gains in size. The brain continues to mature. The fetus advances from 1 ounce to 2 pounds in eight weeks. It grows four to five times in length, from about 3 inches to 14 inches. By the end of the second trimester, the fetus opens and shuts its eyes, sucks its thumb, alternatives between wakefulness and sleep, and perceives light and sounds. Soft, downy hair grows above the eyes and on the scalp. The skin turns ruddy because of blood vessels that show through the surface.
