What is the contingency approach to leadership? Describe these theories:

Fiedler's
contingency model and Hersey and Blanchard's situational model.
What will be an ideal response?

Contingency theorists contend that the best style of leadership is the one most
appropriate for the particular situation. Fiedler's contingency model holds that most people are
good at either task or maintenance roles, and the best style depends on which of these are most
important: leader-member relations, task structure, and position power. The situational model
holds that good leaders can change styles and should do so based on the extent to which a group
is willing (confident and motivated) and able.
