One function of language is to appeal to your listeners' senses. Explain how this can be done and
provide at least three examples of sensory images.
What will be an ideal response?
When speaking, we can use language that appeals to sight, hearing, touch, taste and smell.
Colorful language can create vivid images that appeals to each of these various senses. Answers may vary
in the examples, but students could list any of the following:
(a) Visual images recreate the sight of something.
(b) Auditory images suggest the sound of something.
(c) Tactile images recreate the feel of something.
(d) Thermal images create impressions of heat and cold.
(e) Gustatory images recreate the taste of something.
(f) Kinetic images create feelings of motion or movement.
(g) Kinesthetic images suggest states of muscular tension or relaxation.
(h) Olfactory images suggest the smell of something.
