Examine the story line of Ariosto’s Orlando Furioso, and identify the elements of chivalry and courtly love.

What will be an ideal response?

This epic takes a satiric approach to chivalry and courtly love. It was extremely popular and inspired artists to depict scenes from its narrative. The story line is modeled after The Song of Roland and is set in the context of the wars against the forces of Islam. Orlando cannot come to terms with his unrequited love of Angelica (a central element of courtly love) and begins a fantastic set of adventures that skewer the tenets of chivalry: an ill-mannered knight, women rescuing men, the expectation of sexual favors in return for heroic deeds, and so on.
