Compare and contrast the Zapatista rebellion in Mexico with Boko Haram in Nigeria. What do these groups have in common? How do they differ?
What will be an ideal response?
Zapatista movement fought long repression, poverty and was sparked by land reform in Mexico. They initially utilized political violence, followed by the first major internet-based transnational activism, protests, and semi-autonomous control of territory. The Zapatista movement resulted in land reform, and helped spur democratization and indigenous rights in Mexico. Boko Haram, on the other hand, fought against regional poverty and marginalization using widespread political violence. They also engaged in local and global Islamist movements. They shifted from violence targeted at state infrastructure to terrorism, partly in response to military repression. Ultimately, Boko Haram declared caliphate and joined ISIS in 2014 and 2015, but dropped affiliation in 2016.
