Explain why Carol Gilligan decided to develop her own theory separate from Kohlberg's moral stages

Gilligan worked with Lawrence Kohlberg on his Moral Development Theory, but became independent and began to criticize Kohlberg's work. She felt that Kohlberg only studied "privileged, white men and boys" and this caused a biased opinion against women. She felt that a woman's development in terms of their caring effect on human relationships was given less significance than some of the male characteristics of rights and rules. She felt women must learn to address their own interests AND the interests of others. That women hesitate to judge because they see the complexities of relationships.
