What are the advantages and disadvantages of Web fonts?
What will be an ideal response?
Before Web fonts, designers had to place a graphic image in the page of text that used a font not installed on the end user's computer. Web fonts have several advantages over using a graphic image to include unique fonts, including the following:
• Web fonts are fully searchable.
• Web fonts are accessible to assistive devices.
• Web fonts can be translated by in-browser translation apps and services.
• You can use CSS to modify text formatted with a Web font as you can other fonts by setting line height, letter spacing, text alignment, and so forth.
Even with these advantages, you should use Web fonts sparingly because slight variations exist in the way different user agents display the Web fonts. For example, the current versions of Firefox and Opera briefly display the wrong font when the page is loading and the Web font has not yet been downloaded. Also, user agents that do not understand the @font-face rule will pass over the rule when displaying the text; because CSS is cascading, text will be displayed based on the closest rule. For example, the text may be displayed in the default font specified for the site in the page properties. Finally, keep in mind that fonts are protected by copyright and many EULAs do not include Web font use in the agreement.
