Windows 8 has a dual personality that affects the way you work with it. On the one hand, Windows 8 offers a flexible desktop originally designed for use with a keyboard and mouse. On the other hand, Windows also includes elements designed for touchscreen devices, such as tablet computers and smartphones. Both aspects of Windows can be useful, depending on the task you're trying to accomplish and the device that you are using.
The Windows desktop is inherited from earlier versions of Windows. It lets you spread out multiple application windows to work on several projects at the same time. On devices with large screens, this feature is useful. On small screen devices, however, multiple windows may be too small to use effectively. If you have a computer with a large screen, be sure to take advantage of the desktop's ability to display multiple application windows.
