The minimum feature size of semiconductors is determined by the lithography manufacturing process. In 2000 it was 250 nm. In 2011 it was 22 nm. It is expected to reach 11 nm by 2022. This cannot continue as the size is beginning to approach atomic limits. The charge stored on insulated conductors is subject to statistical
fluctuations. Quantum mechanical effects have to be considered.
